Uterussounds are intended to probe a woman's uterus through the cervix, to measure the length and the direction of the cervical canal and uterus, to determine the level of dilation, or to induce further dilation. Uterine probing can be performed before embryo transfer to determine the depth of the uterus and the ease of embryo transfer catheter can be passed through the cervix. It is performed before inserting an intrauterine device (IUD) to measure the length and direction of the cervical canal and uterus. This reduces the risk of perforation of the uterus by the IUD. This can occur when the IUD is inserted too deeply or at the wrong angle.
